World First Web Video Chat From Space

World First Web Video Chat From Space

On 28 November, T-Online and the European Space Agency (ESA) have announced they will produce the first-ever space web video chat with astronaut Thomas Reiter responding to questions via the Internet live from the International Space Station. In a unique media tie-up, Germany’s leading Internet service provider and ESA will conduct a live space video chat via the Internet on 28 November 2006, starting at 21:15 (CET).

The event will enable German-speaking space enthusiasts to communicate with ESA astronaut Thomas Reiter - from Germany - via the web direct from the ISS, 400 km above the Earth where Reiter is now in the closing stages of the historic Astrolab Mission.

Iconix Shipping HD-RH1 Micro-Camera

Iconix Shipping HD-RH1 Micro-Camera

Iconix Video announced that its HD-RH1 high-definition POV (point-of-view) three-CCD remote camera system, which made headlines at this year’s NAB 2006, is now shipping. Moreover, the camera with a remote head that weighs only 2.5oz. and a total system weight of less than 4lbs., is garnering increasing interest from the religious broadcasting community.

The camera head assembly features a 1/3in. progressive 16:9 image sensor, backed by a 1/3in. three-CCD prism system for optics, using 14-bit quantization at the A/D conversion and processing steps. Standard C-mount lenses are used with the head, which can be tripod-mounted or used with mobile stabilization units previously reserved for still cameras. Different from most digital cameras, whose imagers run at the same rate as the output signal, the HD-RH1 three-CCD prism uses an asynchronous signal processing architecture, which runs the CCD imagers at a completely different clock rate from the output signal, allowing for cooler-running CCDs and more efficient processing.

PhilTube Doesn’t Want to Be Bothered

PhilTube Doesn't Want to Be Bothered

PhilTube is a viral marketing stunt/video blog in the style of “The Office”. The site, which is styled to look just like YouTube, is an absolute hoot. It’s the brainchild of PGM Artists, a video production firm run by Phil McyIntre. The HuffPo has more.

There’s an eclectic range of videos up on their site, but this one is funny. It’s about an office worker (Phil) who holds all his calls, including ad exec cum talk show host Donny Deutsch, to make sure he gets his daily vlogging in.

C-SPAN To Launch User Generated Video Site

C-SPAN To Launch User Generated Video Site

Public interest TV station C-SPAN and online media storage provider StreamLoad have announced that the two companies will collaborate on a new user submitted video site set to launch later this month and called ViewFinder.

Will user submitted video sent to C-SPAN be interesting? Will a large number of people submit video? It’s a fascinating gamble. Could it be more obvious that old media is looking to incorporate new media, instead of battening down the hatches and rambling on about “objectivity?” I hope both of these mainstream news experiments with user submitted video are successful and we get to enjoy the benefits of both old media and new media.

1videoConference: Open Source Web Conferencing

1videoConference: Open Source Web Conferencing

1videoConference is a free web conferencing tool in alpha stage that’s burning up the charts on Sourceforge. Site administrators can then invite users to participate in a video, voice, text chat and screen sharing web conference. The product is far from perfect today, but if these sorts of services can be implemented well in open source they could really change the high priced game of web conferencing.

Latency and sound quality are all right so far, video image quality is acceptable. Screen sharing hardly works yet, the conference admin can only get a very low quality view of participants’ screens and participants cannot view the admin’s screen. Thus it’s alpha, a proof of concept or something you’d only want to use in certain circumstances.
